Kinetic Math’s Mastering Fractions Summer Program

Children gain some basic understanding of fractions when children come to school. They understand the concept of half or equal sharing by counting one for you, one for you… Then, in the early grades, they get to learn formally what a fraction is and how one whole, one-half and one-fourth looks like.

However, when they get to the third and fourth grade, they are taught more complex concepts and skills about fractions. They go beyond what a numerator and denominator means and beyond naming or identifying fractions. Children are now introduced to fraction arithmetic- addition, subtraction, multiplication and division of fractions.

Many students do poorly in this topic in Math. Children often commit mistakes on the procedures because they rely on rote memorization of the steps rather than understanding the underlying concepts. Other students view fractions as meaningless symbols or view numerators and denominators as separate numbers rather that a unified whole.

A deep and enduring understanding of fractions is an important stepping stone for learning other math concepts such as decimals, percentage, ratio, and probability. It is likewise essential for learning algebra, geometry and other aspects of higher math.

To help students excel in Fractions next school year, Kinetic Math Enrichment Center is offering Mastering Fractions Summer Program. This program will provide a step-by-step introduction to fractions through a visual and conceptual approach. It will help students visualize and conceptualize fractions and calculate and solve word problems using them. This course will tackle adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing fractions. It will likewise teach the students how to draw fraction bar models which are powerful tools in solving multi-step fraction word problems.

Kinetic Math’s Integers and Algebra Summer Course

Why do many high school students fail or get low grades in Math?

Why do some students have difficulty answering entrance test questions in Math?

One of the many culprits for the above-mentioned difficulties is the poor basic foundational knowledge and skills in algebra and integers. Understanding algebra and integers are necessary to solve equations.

Algebra is a branch of Mathematics that uses numbers and letters that represent numbers. Algebra strengthens logic skills and introduces abstract thinking. In algebra, students must understand that symbols such as x and y stand for numbers that vary and that these symbols can be used in solving real-life and mathematical problems.

In integers, on the other hand, students deal with zero, positive and negative whole numbers. It is very important to learn this because we use integers in our daily lives- weather, finances, sports, geography and science. Since performing operations on integers involve signs of the numbers and signs of operations, some students struggle in remembering the rules and procedure for certain problems or equations.

This summer, Kinetic Math Enrichment Center will offer the Integers and Algebra Summer Course. Integers & Algebra Summer Course aims to help students transition from the visual model method to the abstract concepts of integers and algebra. In this course, students will learn about integers and build on the knowledge to develop skills in algebra. This will train the students to think and reason logically, orderly and abstractly.
