HOW TO UNLEASH YOUR CHILD’S MENTAL MATH POWER

In a world where calculator apps are found in every cellphone, we ask ourselves, is mental math still a necessary skill? The answer is a definite YES! If you have asked the same question, you probably are guilty of believing the common mental math myth that being good in mental math is just about being able to do math in your head. According to Cathy Seeley, the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics President, although mental math is often associated with the ability to do computations quickly, in its broadest sense, mental math also involves conceptual understanding and problem solving.

How then can you help your child be skillful in mental math, mastering both conceptual understanding and computational fluency? Here are some helpful tips:

  1. Explicitly teach the mental math strategies. Teach your child one mental math strategy each week. This will give your child ample time to master one strategy before learning a new one. Make sure to emphasize when it is best to use each strategy. This will empower your child in choosing the best tool to use when dealing with a certain math problem.
  2. Do not teach mental math strategies as mere tricks. Back them up with math concepts. A common misconception about mental math is that it is just about rote memorization or information retrieval. One must understand that mental math is more than just memorizing multiplication facts. The downside of having this mindset is that we end up putting more importance on the results or answers rather than numerical fluency. Thus, some end up teaching children mere math tricks instead of math strategies that leverage mathematical properties and concepts such as the distributive property, factors of numbers, percentage, and inverses. It is crucial to teach the kids not just the “hows” but the “whys” behind each mental math strategy.
  3. Make the learning experience fun. You may use materials like whiteboards, counters, blocks, Powerpoint presentations when introducing a math strategy. Since younger children are most likely visual learners, they can understand the strategy better when introduced to them with visual aids or hands-on materials. The more engaging the experience is, the more they learn from them.
  4. Apply mental math in real life. The next time you visit a toy store, ask your child how much will two of her favorite dolls cost or how much cheaper is the toy robot than the toy car. Applying mental calculation in everyday life lets children practice their skills wherever they are. It also helps them realize how useful this skill really is, which may motivate them to practice even more.
  5. Practice, practice, practice. Reinforce the math strategies by giving your children oral and written drills. You may also let your kids play mental math online games and apps to gain mental math proficiency.

Why Do Children Hate Math? (And How to Fix It)

It’s a well-known fact that most schoolchildren dislike math. They don’t listen nor participate in math class, they “forget” to do their multiplication homework, or they groan when you make them do some required algebra reading. It is quite alarming how one school subject developed such a bad reputation among students, enough for them to shun mathematics altogether and forget its importance in later life.

As parents to these youngsters, we want them to like and enjoy math, not just for them to do well in school but also for them to see how learning math develops many life skills that prepare them for the future. Before we can help our children love math, we first need to reach the root and understand why they hate math in the first place. Listed below are some reasons where this hatred and fear of math come from.

 

  1. Math is not being taught enthusiastically in school. Math differs from other school subjects because, at first glance, it is a very technical field. Other subjects like Biology or English, while also technical, can easily make use of visual materials and real-life examples for a more engaging way of teaching. Traditionally, mathematics is taught straightforwardly, which makes the subject appear difficult, boring, or impractical. Extra effort must be given to make mathematics engaging and easier to understand, but rarely is this extra effort given in schools.

 

  1. There is no encouragement for children to learn the hard lessons. Even when Math is taught properly and enthusiastically, it is still a very difficult subject to master. There are several concepts that need to be understood and difficulty increases in higher math courses, so it is normal for a child to get lost somewhere along the way. Without proper encouragement, their learning pace may slow down and their attitude towards math may change into “something too hard for me to handle”. When they find it harder to understand the key concepts, encouragement from their peers, their teachers, and their parents is needed to help them get back on track.

 

  1. They do not see the importance of studying mathematics in the real world. In our modern, techy world, children often lose interest in mathematics when they realize that you can just use a calculator or a computer to solve their math homework. Or they don’t see how learning about these equations in the classroom could be applied in other fields or in solving real-world problems. Many fields, however, are dependent on math concepts to answer their questions, such as physics, engineering, and even biology. And more than helping build a better understanding of our world, math also develops our problem solving skills, hard work, and diligence – all of which are needed for our children to succeed in the future.

 

  1. The negative perception on mathematics hinders children from learning. The general attitude of people towards math is that it is altogether difficult and stressful. While we cannot take away other people’s “bad” experiences with math, the bad things we say about math discourage our children from trying their best with the subject or even trying at all. What they need are supportive statements from their peers and teachers that elevate math; that while math may at times be difficult, their capabilities and hard work are enough for them to overcome the subject.

 

  1. They associate their bad experiences with the subject. Children do not just wake up one day suddenly hating math. Their disliking for the subject is learned throughout their years of bad experiences with math. All of the factors mentioned earlier contribute to give the subject such a bad reputation among its students. They may be associating the subject with a terror trigonometry teacher, a failed math exam many years before, or a boring algebra class. For children to forget their bad experiences with mathematics, they need to be exposed to a different learning system or environment where they can develop a new liking for the subject and see the true value of mathematics in their lives.

 

Several factors contribute to children disliking math, to the point that they hinder themselves from mastering the subject and developing some important life skills. One of the easiest and most effective ways to help your child love the subject is to have them learn mathematics in a healthy, productive, and encouraging environment. Kinetic Math’s Math Wizards Summer Camp

 

Is your child math-ready for the BIG SCHOOL?

Below is a guide to some basic math milestones for children in their early years:

·         Can identify basic shapes

·         Can sort things by color, size or shape

·         Understands the concept of size

·         Knows that when one item is taken away from a set of 2 items, one item is left

Kinetic Math’s Integers and Algebra Summer Course

Why do many high school students fail or get low grades in Math?

Why do some students have difficulty answering entrance test questions in Math?

 

One of the many culprits for the above-mentioned difficulties is the poor basic foundational knowledge and skills in algebra and integers. Understanding algebra and integers are necessary to solve equations.

Algebra is a branch of Mathematics that uses numbers and letters that represent numbers. Algebra strengthens logic skills and introduces abstract thinking. In algebra, students must understand that symbols such as x and y stand for numbers that vary and that these symbols can be used in solving real-life and mathematical problems.

In integers, on the other hand, students deal with zero, positive and negative whole numbers. It is very important to learn this because we use integers in our daily lives- weather, finances, sports, geography and science. OVERCOMING MATH ANXIETY THE KINETIC MATH WAY

Does your child cringe when he/she is about to attend a Math class?

Is he/she always worried about being called to recite Math class?

Does your child fear Math test more than any other kind of test?

Does he/she dread doing Math tasks?

Does he/she worry about not being able to keep up with the rest of the class in Math?

 

If your child has this strong emotional reaction to Mathematics, he/she might be suffering from Math anxiety. Math anxiety is an intense emotional feeling of anxiety that people have about their ability to understand and do Mathematics. People who feel tension, apprehension and fear of situations involving Math are said to have Math anxiety.

Math anxiety may start when children are quite young. This is usually caused by a student’s negative experience with math. This may be related to getting a low grade in math, being embarrassed in Math class, unpleasant experience with the math teacher, or being punished by a parent or teacher for failing to master a math concept.

Math anxiety is an emotional, rather than an intellectual problem. However, math anxiety interferes with the person’s ability to do math tasks, thus, leading to poor performance in Math. Because math anxiety can reduce math competence, it is crucial that parents detect and address this as soon as possible.

KINETIC MATH: A REASON TO LOVE MATH

OUR STORY

From the inception of Kinetic Math on February 2014, we have been committed to help children develop a deeper understanding of mathematical concepts and hone their mathematical skills.

Kinetic Math Enrichment Center was born out of the founders’ desire to transform students’ deep-seated negative attitude about Math to a positive mindset by creating a safe haven for learning Mathematics. On November 2014, Kinetic Math San Juan started its mission to let students experience, explore, discover and enjoy math. After a year, we opened a new branch in Katipunan to cater to more students. Motivated to address the need for individualized learning, Kinetic Math BGC was established five months after, to offer one-on-one Math sessions.

KINETIC MATH is your TRUE Math enrichment center. It offers energizing and engaging learning activities which help students develop numerical fluency, creativity, critical thinking and problem solving skills while enjoying math.

The programs’ progression from a learning task to guided practice to independent practice not only boosts the child’s confidence and fosters the child’s interest in Math but also enables the child to develop a deeper understanding of math concepts.

Kinetic Math aims to:

  • equip students with numeracy, reasoning, problem solving skills and critical thinking skills that are necessary for life.
  • provide students venue to reason logically, communicate mathematically, learn cooperatively and independently.
  • develop the children’s love for mathematics through engaging and challenging learning activities.

 

OUR PROGRAMS 

Preschool Math is a program for children aged 3-5 years old. It aims to prepare them for the big school by providing them with a strong foundation in Mathematics. In this program, Math concepts are introduced in systematic, engaging, meaningful and fun way through exciting activities, fun games and songs.

Singapore Math is a math curriculum which has been recognized worldwide as it helps students develop not only their critical, creative and problem solving skills but also their positive attitude about math. It teaches students in stages, beginning with the concrete (using manipulatives), then moving to the pictorial (solving problems with pictures) and finally working in the abstract (numbers). It makes children learn not just the “how’s” but also the “why’s” of mathematics which strengthens the pupils’ conceptual understanding.

Math Tutorial Program is also offered to students who need help in understanding their Math lesson in school. During the tutorial session, the well-trained Kinetic Math teachers discuss the math lesson, and provide the students with guided and independent drills. They also check the student’s homework and review the students for quizzes and examinations.

Mental Math Program aims to teach children PROVEN strategies to compute mentally with accuracy and speed. This will empower the students to calculate mathematically in their heads without using paper and pencil. In this course, children will develop the fluency, flexibility and strategic thinking in mental computation by addressing the following:

  1. WHAT: Children will learn the basic number facts and other math concepts.
  2. WHEN: Students will have the ability to recognize the demands of a problem and choose the best strategy to solve it.
  3. WHY: Each strategy is anchored to math concepts, making it easier for students to understand why a procedure works.
  4. HOW: Various mental math strategies in addition, subtraction, multiplication and division will be discussed systematically and thoroughly in the course.

Math Exam Review Program is a review program that prepares the student for his quarterly exam. Mock exams are given to the students weeks before the exam to detect any misconceptions about the past lessons. During the session, the teacher revisits certain topics that are challenging for the child. It is also through this program that students learn varied test-taking skills.

Traditional Math to Singapore Math Transition Program aims to help the child bridge the gap between the math skills that he/she has learned in traditional math and the required math skills for his/her grade level in Singapore or in a school offering the Singapore Math curriculum. This course will equip the students with an in-depth understanding of the mathematical concepts and with varied tools for solving complex multi-step word problems, the core of the Singapore Math curriculum.

Bellwork is a research-based program from the United States which provides the students consistent practice of previously taught lessons. This helps children improve their understanding of mathematical concepts, master important skills in Math and reduce their test-taking anxieties.

Saxon Math is another well-researched program which is popular in the United States for its incremental approach to Mathematics. It breaks down complex concepts into related increments, thus, giving students ample time to understand and practice the lesson. It distributes instruction, practice, and assessment throughout the lessons and school year which enables students to master concepts. In Saxon Math, as new lessons are introduced, previously learned concepts are likewise reviewed. This helps in ensuring that the child integrates and retains math concepts.

 Math Homeschool Tutorial is a program that is designed to help the home-schooled students understand math concepts and develop math skills using their homeschool math curriculum. This individualized, student-paced program optimizes the student’s learning by teaching the lessons in ways that suit each student’s individual interests, strengths and learning styles.
