Kinetic Math’s Integers and Algebra Summer Course

Why do many high school students fail or get low grades in Math?

Why do some students have difficulty answering entrance test questions in Math?

One of the many culprits for the above-mentioned difficulties is the poor basic foundational knowledge and skills in algebra and integers. Understanding algebra and integers are necessary to solve equations.

Algebra is a branch of Mathematics that uses numbers and letters that represent numbers. Algebra strengthens logic skills and introduces abstract thinking. In algebra, students must understand that symbols such as x and y stand for numbers that vary and that these symbols can be used in solving real-life and mathematical problems.

In integers, on the other hand, students deal with zero, positive and negative whole numbers. It is very important to learn this because we use integers in our daily lives- weather, finances, sports, geography and science. Since performing operations on integers involve signs of the numbers and signs of operations, some students struggle in remembering the rules and procedure for certain problems or equations.

This summer, Kinetic Math Enrichment Center will offer the Integers and Algebra Summer Course. Integers & Algebra Summer Course aims to help students transition from the visual model method to the abstract concepts of integers and algebra. In this course, students will learn about integers and build on the knowledge to develop skills in algebra. This will train the students to think and reason logically, orderly and abstractly.

OVERCOMING MATH ANXIETY THE KINETIC MATH WAY

Does your child cringe when he/she is about to attend a Math class?

Is he/she always worried about being called to recite Math class?

Does your child fear Math test more than any other kind of test?

Does he/she tend to zone out in Math class?

Does he/she dread doing Math tasks?

Does he/she worry about not being able to keep up with the rest of the class in Math?

If your child has this strong emotional reaction to Mathematics, he/she might be suffering from Math anxiety. Math anxiety is an intense emotional feeling of anxiety that people have about their ability to understand and do Mathematics. People who feel tension, apprehension and fear of situations involving Math are said to have Math anxiety.

Math anxiety may start when children are quite young. This is usually caused by a student’s negative experience with math. This may be related to getting a low grade in math, being embarrassed in Math class, unpleasant experience with the math teacher, or being punished by a parent or teacher for failing to master a math concept.

Math anxiety is an emotional, rather than an intellectual problem. However, math anxiety interferes with the person’s ability to do math tasks, thus, leading to poor performance in Math. Because math anxiety can reduce math competence, it is crucial that parents detect and address this as soon as possible.

One way to combat math anxiety is to provide the child a safe venue to learn Math. Kinetic Math Enrichment Center recognizes this need which is why it offers one-on-one and group math sessions (1:3 teacher-student ratio) in a child-friendly learning space.

Kinetic Math is also known for its energizing and engaging learning activities which help students develop numerical fluency, creativity, critical thinking and problem solving skills while enjoying Math.

KINETIC MATH: A REASON TO LOVE MATH

OUR STORY

From the inception of Kinetic Math on February 2014, we have been committed to help children develop a deeper understanding of mathematical concepts and hone their mathematical skills.

Kinetic Math Enrichment Center was born out of the founders’ desire to transform students’ deep-seated negative attitude about Math to a positive mindset by creating a safe haven for learning Mathematics. On November 2014, Kinetic Math San Juan started its mission to let students experience, explore, discover and enjoy math. After a year, we opened a new branch in Katipunan to cater to more students. Motivated to address the need for individualized learning, Kinetic Math BGC was established five months after, to offer one-on-one Math sessions.

ABOUT US

KINETIC MATH is your TRUE Math enrichment center. It offers energizing and engaging learning activities which help students develop numerical fluency, creativity, critical thinking and problem solving skills while enjoying math.

The programs’ progression from a learning task to guided practice to independent practice not only boosts the child’s confidence and fosters the child’s interest in Math but also enables the child to develop a deeper understanding of math concepts.

Kinetic Math aims to:

  • equip students with numeracy, reasoning, problem solving skills and critical thinking skills that are necessary for life.
  • provide students venue to reason logically, communicate mathematically, learn cooperatively and independently.
  • develop the children’s love for mathematics through engaging and challenging learning activities.

OUR PROGRAMS

Preschool Math is a program for children aged 3-5 years old. It aims to prepare them for the big school by providing them with a strong foundation in Mathematics. In this program, Math concepts are introduced in systematic, engaging, meaningful and fun way through exciting activities, fun games and songs.

Singapore Math is a math curriculum which has been recognized worldwide as it helps students develop not only their critical, creative and problem solving skills but also their positive attitude about math. It teaches students in stages, beginning with the concrete (using manipulatives), then moving to the pictorial (solving problems with pictures) and finally working in the abstract (numbers). It makes children learn not just the “how’s” but also the “why’s” of mathematics which strengthens the pupils’ conceptual understanding.

Math Tutorial Program is also offered to students who need help in understanding their Math lesson in school. During the tutorial session, the well-trained Kinetic Math teachers discuss the math lesson, and provide the students with guided and independent drills. They also check the student’s homework and review the students for quizzes and examinations.

Mental Math Program aims to teach children PROVEN strategies to compute mentally with accuracy and speed. This will empower the students to calculate mathematically in their heads without using paper and pencil. In this course, children will develop the fluency, flexibility and strategic thinking in mental computation by addressing the following:

  1. WHAT: Children will learn the basic number facts and other math concepts.
  2. WHEN: Students will have the ability to recognize the demands of a problem and choose the best strategy to solve it.
  3. WHY: Each strategy is anchored to math concepts, making it easier for students to understand why a procedure works.
  4. HOW: Various mental math strategies in addition, subtraction, multiplication and division will be discussed systematically and thoroughly in the course.

Math Exam Review Program is a review program that prepares the student for his quarterly exam. Mock exams are given to the students weeks before the exam to detect any misconceptions about the past lessons. During the session, the teacher revisits certain topics that are challenging for the child. It is also through this program that students learn varied test-taking skills.

Traditional Math to Singapore Math Transition Program aims to help the child bridge the gap between the math skills that he/she has learned in traditional math and the required math skills for his/her grade level in Singapore or in a school offering the Singapore Math curriculum. This course will equip the students with an in-depth understanding of the mathematical concepts and with varied tools for solving complex multi-step word problems, the core of the Singapore Math curriculum.

Bellwork is a research-based program from the United States which provides the students consistent practice of previously taught lessons. This helps children improve their understanding of mathematical concepts, master important skills in Math and reduce their test-taking anxieties.

Saxon Math is another well-researched program which is popular in the United States for its incremental approach to Mathematics. It breaks down complex concepts into related increments, thus, giving students ample time to understand and practice the lesson. It distributes instruction, practice, and assessment throughout the lessons and school year which enables students to master concepts. In Saxon Math, as new lessons are introduced, previously learned concepts are likewise reviewed. This helps in ensuring that the child integrates and retains math concepts.

Math Homeschool Tutorial is a program that is designed to help the home-schooled students understand math concepts and develop math skills using their homeschool math curriculum. This individualized, student-paced program optimizes the student’s learning by teaching the lessons in ways that suit each student’s individual interests, strengths and learning styles.

KINETIC MATH: YOUR MATH HOMEWORK PARTNER

Are you having a difficult time helping your child in his or her Math homework?

Does your child find his math lesson more confusing after teaching him a “short-cut”?

Does your child give you a “…but teacher said…” or “That is not what teacher said in class,” statement when you help him with a math problem?

If your answer to the questions above is YES, you are not alone. Many parents get frustrated when guiding their children in their Math homework. This may be attributed to the changes in the Math curriculum these days. Gone were the days when a person is considered a Math whiz if he can calculate big numbers mentally in a few seconds. Since the calculator, computer or even the mobile phone can do the calculation for us, Math these days is now more focused in honing the child’s thinking and problem solving skills. Thus, the objective and content of the Math homework has changed from procedural to conceptual understanding of the lesson.

Aside from the Math Tutorial Program, Kinetic Math also offers Math Exam Review Program, Singapore Math Program,  Saxon Math Program,  Bellwork Program,  Mental Math Program,  Preschool Math Program,  Math Summer Programs,  and the Traditional Math to Singapore Math Transition Program.

KINETIC MATH’S TRADITIONAL MATH TO SINGAPORE MATH TRANSITION PROGRAM

As Singapore continues to impress the world in their performance in Math in competitions and high-stake tests, more and more schools all over the world have adapted the Singapore Math in their curriculum. In the Philippines, hundreds of schools like Ateneo de Manila Grade School, Xavier School, Immaculate Concepcion Academy (ICA), KEYS Grade School, MGC New Life Christian Academy, Victory Christian International School, and Meridian International Learning Experience have already shifted from the traditional Math curriculum to that of Singapore.

The curricular shift, however, requires comprehensive training for teachers, as the curriculum transforms from abstract to a more visual, and concrete approach. It likewise puts more emphasis on honing the child’s critical and problem solving skills.

Students, on the other hand, must unlearn some habits or methods. They must likewise learn new ways to understand Math concepts, and new strategies to solve Math problems as they shift to Singapore Math method. Needless to say, some students find it difficult to adjust to the demands of the new curriculum.

To address this concern, Kinetic Math Enrichment Center is now offering the TRADITIONAL MATH TO SINGAPORE MATH TRANSITION PROGRAM. This program aims to help the child bridge the gap between the math skills that he/she has learned in traditional math and the required math skills for his/her grade level in Singapore or in a school offering the Singapore Math curriculum. This course will equip the students with an in-depth understanding of the mathematical concepts and with varied tools for solving complex multi-step word problems, the core of the Singapore Math curriculum.

This program is for:

* Students who started with traditional math and is now enrolled in a school using the Singapore Math method

* Students who are transferring to a school using the Singapore Math curriculum

* Students who are moving to Singapore

* Students who will take the entrance test in a school using the Singapore Math curriculum

To enroll your child in the program, you may visit or call the Kinetic Math near you.

Great Online Resources for Math Worksheets

As mentioned in the previous blog on How to Help Your Children Succeed in Math, one way to help kids do well in Math is to provide them with additional drills at home. However, many parents do not have time to create worksheets. Thus, it is just awesome that there are many online resources providing worksheets (sometimes with answer keys) that can help children to achieve mastery in their Math lessons. Below are just some of the great websites that parents may use to develop their children’s mathematical skills.

http://www.math-aids.com/

https://www.math-drills.com/

http://themathworksheetsite.com/

http://www.kidzone.ws/math/

http://www.softschools.com/math/worksheets/

http://www.teach-nology.com/worksheets/math/

http://www.mathinenglish.com/

Parents, however, must remember the following when using the worksheets for their children:

  1. Make sure that the worksheets are appropriate to the grade level of your children.

  1. Be clear with the objectives of the current lesson of your children and ensure that the worksheets are aligned with these objectives.

  1. Check the worksheets first before letting your children answer them. That way, you can correct typographical errors and remove inappropriate items (for the grade level or for the lesson).

  1. Check the answer keys (if there are) because sometimes the provided answer keys have incorrect answers too.

  1. When children commit mistakes, discuss and explain the item. Then, give a similar item and see if they can already apply what you have discussed in solving the new item.

If your children need more help in understanding the lesson, you may opt to seek help from math mentors who can provide a thorough discussion of the lesson. Math experts can also assess your children and spot the core skills that the child must learn in order to equip them in understanding the current lessons. You may visit the Kinetic Math center near you to inquire about the programs that can benefit your children.

How to Help Your Children Succeed in Math

Many parents wonder how they can make their children do well in Math. Some parents would even confess that they themselves hate Math or they themselves struggled in Math during their student days. Here are some tips on how to bring out the math whiz in your children:

  1. Make your children see how fun MATH can be. Play enjoyable math games with your children. Some examples of games that you can use to teach Math to children are Monopoly (counting money), Dominoes (subitizing, matching), and Pick-up Sticks (Scoring entails addition, multiplication and skip-counting skills).

  1. Look for varied ways to review your children for the Math quizzes or exams. You may play a game wherein the highest scorer gets a prize. You may also use online games and activities that are related to the topics that will be included in the test.

  1. Make your children realize that Math can be used in their daily life. For instance, you may ask them questions when watching a basketball game: Who got more points? How many more points did they get than their opponents? You may also ask them in the grocery if their money is enough to buy certain items. For estimation, you can also ask them to estimate how much the bill would be for certain number of liters of gas while in a gas station.

  1. Talk with them about what they learned in Math. Show them that you are interested in their new discoveries in their Math class.

  1. Show them how to handle Math homework. Teach them to begin by reviewing their textbook and/or notes. Then, begin with the worksheets or homework. Remind them to check their work when they are done answering all the items.

  1. Provide additional Math resources that they can consult should they have difficulty in certain items. Additional textbooks and workbooks may come handy for additional examples and drills. Make sure though that the books are aligned with your child’s math curriculum. There are also some websites which provide good explanation of certain Math topics (blogs, videos) and varied ways to assess the child’s math learning (worksheets, online activities, online games).

  1. Seek help from a Math tutor if needed. Math mentors know how to teach and practice time-tested problem solving techniques. Enroll your children in a math center that will not only help them overcome their fear in Math but will also equip them with the necessary math skills to succeed in school and in life.

Kinetic Math Enrichment Center provides math tutorial and enrichment sessions. It aims to help children develop numerical fluency, creativity, critical thinking and problem solving skills while enjoying math. The program’s progression from a learning task to guided practice to independent practice not only boosts the child’s confidence and fosters the child’s interest in Math but also enables the child to develop a deeper understanding of mathematical concepts.
